Fay Spain, an AZ Gal, Live Rent Free, win Any Fight, More

Fay Spain-Another Lovely AZ Gal

She was your typical B-movie drive-in bad girl - sometimes blonde, sometimes brunette, always bodacious. A tease, a taunter and a temptress throughout most her career, Fay Spain was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1932. She headed to New York where she initially found summer stock work and a bit of television exposure.

One of her earliest TV appearances was not as an actress but as a contestant on the TV game show You Bet Your Life (1950) starring Groucho Marx. By 1956, this fetching starlet was winning episodic roles on the more popular shows of the day, including Perry Mason (1957), Cheyenne (1955) and Gunsmoke (1955). She was also gaining notice on the covers of magazines. This cheesecake attention led directly to her juvenile delinquent debut in Dragstrip Girl

She passed in 1988 [Most of you can tell I love AZ...the photo of Spain in wood tub was shot in
An old film set down the road from where I lived near the Superstition Mountains-many Hollywood legends, including John Wayne and Elvis stayed at a nearby hotel in Apache Junction at the foothills of the mountains near the site the famous Lost Dutchman Goldmine which no one has ever found. The area makes for some great hiking and exploring and is rumored to have been a hideout for outlaws and Apaches. The hotel has since been torn down but there is still a tourist area called Gold Field nearby where you can get a feel for what it was like to live in a gold mining town.

When I was younger there was an old man who sure looked like a miner complete with a burro who would come out of the foothills of the Superstitions and would hang around a popular eatery called the “Mining Camp” where all the food was served on tin plates at long camp tables . Lots of folks would give him cash in order to have their photo taken with him].

Beer Floats, Whiskey Butter & Other Dad's Day Delights

Happy Father's Day!

The first observance of a "Father's Day" was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the loss of her father when, on December 1907, the Monongah Mining Disaster in nearby Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving around a thousand fatherless children. Clayton suggested her pastor Robert Thomas Webb to honor all those fathers.

Although not as popular as Mother's Day, it's popular to celebrate Father's Day by hoisting a few beers and hanging around that ancient cooking tradition-the fire pit and of course, enjoying one's favorite sporting event.

Upgrade Dad's Day Dinner with these Delicious Additions

>Whiskey butter: Spiked butter adds sizzle to steaks & tastes great on BBQ faves like steak , cornbread, biscuits and grilled corn. On medium low speed, beat 1 cup salted butter, at room temp until light & fluffy, add 4 tsp. Whiskey, 2 tbs. Chopped parsley & 1 clove minced garlic, mixing well. Spoon into a small crock or roll into a log & wrap in parchment paper; freeze until set [about 30-minutes] and chill until ready to serve.

>Beer Float: Spoil dad with something decadent and delicious -an ice-cream float fizzing beer! Pour 8 oz. Of beer in a glass then spoon on two scoops of ice cream. Here are a couple of ideas to try:

  • Chocolate & vanilla-pair a rich chocolate stout such as Young's Double Chocolate Stout with sweet vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce
  • Citrus Splash using pale ales like Samuel Adams IPA, have citrus and floral notes that taste great with tangy sorbets like lemon, lime or peach.
  • Irish Cream- a scoop of zingy mint chip ice cream is the perfect complement to the rich, caramelized taste of Guinness.
  • Java Heaven-coffee loving dads will enjoy pairing coffee ice cream with an espresso stout such as Flying Dog's Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout.

No doubt, there are plenty of gals who would enjoy these as well on a hot summer day-enjoy!

Amateur Polaroid Pinups-Was it the Start of Home Porn?

Amateur Polaroid Pinups-The Beginning of Home Porn?

The warning, 'don't try this at home' is typically applied to dangerous stunts. But when new galleries of images tucked away in dresser drawer drawers were any indication, it seems the dawn of the homegrown pin-up photograph had come of age.

As a teen growing up in NE Ohio my friends played in the woods of a park system the state dubbed the 'emerald necklace, for green chain they formed around the city. It was our favorite haunt to haunt to hike and bike. It was also a favorite a spot favored by young lovers. In our wild youth we scared the 'bejesus' out of many by racing up to their vehicle as they were getting 'settled in' and beating on their doors and shouting.

Luckily for us we were in terrific shape and knew the woods well as we never got caught by these angry lovers.

Once we witnessed a pair of lovers marching off into the woods in the later afternoon carrying a blanklet and one of those new-fangled Polaroid camera – perfect for capturing 'nature' shots.

It wasn't long before those two sheepish lovers came out of the woods trailed by a park ranger.

When I attended ASU I carried my trusty Canon AE-1 everywhere to grab images of the desert, cacti, mountains and all the beautiful women on campus...it was a great way to meet girls.

While on vacation with his family, Edwin Land's 3-year-old daughter asks why she “can't see the picture he has just taken of her.” That day, Land conceives of the instant camera. By the 1950s he's patented his miracle camera and millions of folks are using it to make family memories and to take home porn and nude pinups without fear of the neighborhood snooping censor at the drug store ready to call the police...just wait until video cameras and digital cameras and VCRs come along. The porn age really takes off!

Initially, women rented more pornographic video tapes than men as it allowed for more privacy and it helped spell the end of so-called seedy X-rated movie house.

It's Getting Tougher to Find a Decent Mate

The Me-Centered Society
We live in a “me-centered” society in which tens of millions of us are literally in love with ourselves. When pleasing self becomes the highest priority, that doesn’t leave a lot of room for the kind of self-sacrificial love that marriage requires. An astounding 24 billion “selfies” were uploaded to Google last year, and that says a whole lot about where we are at as a nation. So many of us are inclined to stay with our “partners” for only as long as they make us happy, and the instant that ends many of us wish to dispose of them. And that is a lot easier to do if you are “living together” instead of being legally married.

A Lot Of Young Men Of Marriage Age Have Turned Into Bums
Have you noticed that a lot of young men in their twenties and thirties would rather spend all day watching television and playing video games than doing something constructive?
And record numbers of them have moved back home with no apparent intention of moving out. Today, 32 percent of all American Millennials are living at home with Mommy and Daddy. In some cases this is being done out of necessity because there aren’t enough good jobs, but in other cases it is simply pure laziness.
So what are quality young women supposed to do?

Labor of Love: The Invention of Dating

It's not news that all sorts of supposedly fun activities have grown harder to distinguish from work says Lidijja Haas Harper's. But dating according , according to author Moira Weigel, has never been anything but a rigged game that sucks away each participant's time, money and emotional energy-like an unpaid internship, we're told. Near the close of her searching history of the custom, Weigel concedes that she happened to find true love while writing the book. More often, however, the traps set by dating rituals come across as 'the stuff of horror movies.'

Those patterns begin with the very first dates: In the late 19th century, when young single women began moving to cities for low-wage work, they could afford to have fun only by letting men take them out – a practice that won them the label 'charity girls' and insults far worse.

In the 1920s, every college woman was urged to 'shop around' and the more men she dated, the more she rose in social status. In the 1950s, that earlier generation was amazed when teens dtsrted pairing up and going 'steady.'

Many have said dating is simply a ritual or strategy used to obtain economic security or romantic love...many of us aren't sure what we want. Dating can be a lot of fun, an adventure or a nightmare. There are no clear instructions.

The essentials for survival…

I’ve always been a fan of indoor plumbing.  Since WWII most Americans enjoy running water and indoor toilets.  To me, this might be the best part of progress during the 20th century. Nothing like a hot shower each morning.

Other bits of progress I enjoy include electricity and the PC.  Of course, advances in medicine and agriculture have helped the world too.  Television has been the big disappointment (so-called ‘reality shows’ are dumb jokes and we rarely see any hard hitting documentaries).

So what are the essentials you need for survival?

This is a no brainer.  Food, water, shelter and many would argue, electricity.  All of these are getting more expensive and many predict clean water will be the new ‘gold’ in the coming decades. Learn how to purify water and/or purchase purification tablets (sold in the outdoor camping aisle at Wal Mart and other retailers).  Although expensive, you can also purchase freeze dried ‘camper’ food there too.

Earlier in the year, one of our readers told us he and his family purchased a used RV to use as emergency shelter and would be able to park it, if needed, on the farm owned by his brother.  He also keeps several 5-gallon containers filled with gasoline for emergencies along with a generator.

Backup supplies of toiletries are useful.  Benjamin Franklin used a mixture of honey and ground charcoal as a simple toothpaste…doesn’t sound good to me but a paste of baking soda and water will do the trick just fine.

With the spate of natural disasters hitting our planet almost weekly, a good first aid kit and bug out kit would do well in a survival situation. Taking a first aid class is always a good idea (consult your area Red Cross).

Emergency communication devices would prove useful but I wouldn’t always rely on a cell phone.  Instead, invest in a pair of two-way, multiple channel radios or CBs and keep extra batteries on hand.

Knowledge and a plan of action is essential for surviving disasters, whether man-made or natural.  Even a little amount of preparation can go a long way for creating peace of mind…one book can help tremendously, the Boy Scout manual and of course, using the free resources at our PoorManSurvival.com site, is useful as well.

Stock up to prepare for disasters…
The National Hurricane Center has released a suggested list of supplies. Among these are first aid kits, toys, books and games, and of course food and water. Make sure that you have what you need to entertain and nurture yourself until it’s safe outside once again.

Finally, some might argue the need for a bed bunker in order to survive.  Check out this $2000 item at:

A dab of mayonnaise is perfect for cracks in the wood, according to blog DIY Life.
Of course, this will only work for small cracks, but smooth mayonnaise over the crack to fill it, wipe off any extra, and let the crack sit for a few days. According to DIY Life, the oils and proteins in the mayonnaise will make the wood swell up at the point of contact, and while it likely won't close the crack entirely, it'll definitely shrink. When it's swelled shut a bit, you can then wipe off anything left behind and polish the wood to obscure the crack.

Easy Home Canning

A majority of Americans agree home canned jams and vegetables taste better, but few of us have the time or desire to can at home.  Here are some basics of home canning.

--Wash the jars and lids, then place into a large pot of water and simmer to sterilize.
--Seal the jars with a boiling water canner or covered stock pot fitted with a rack.
--Lift jars out and empty out the water.  Fill your jars leaving room at the top per whatever recipe you’re using.
--Remove air bubbles using a spatula and clean the rims of any excess.  Place hot lid on each jar and secure with the band.
--Place the jars back into boiling water maintaining at least a three inch level of water over the jars and process according to whatever recipe you’re using.

Or…go to your local Walmart and get a Ball Canning Discovery Kit which gives you everything to make your own jams and jelly, salsa and more.

The Nanny State Updates…

Less Regulation Equal More US Jobs…
The National Retail Federation (NRF) issued a press release on Tuesday welcoming plans announced by the Obama Administration to streamline hundreds of government regulations.

President Obama signed an executive order in January requiring federal agencies to review business regulations and streamline or eliminate them where possible. The Administration unveiled Tuesday a package of regulations that have been identified for action, saying it would likely save $10 billion over the next five years.
Retail organization NRF said the move was a step in the right direction, but said the government is continuing to crank out new rules that "hamper the ability of the business community to create desperately needed new jobs."
NRF Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French said that in addition to reducing government regulation, the administration should focus on assisting employers, especially small businesses, with regulatory compliance rather than aggressively pursuing fines and penalties.
"If the purpose of regulations is to ensure that companies conduct business in a responsible way, then let's give them help in doing so," French said. "Massive fines simply take away money that could be put to better use creating jobs and growing the economy."
Americans' confidence in the economy is sitting at its lowest point since March 2009, and in every state in the country, a vast majority of Americans see the economy as getting worse. Meanwhile, the number of people claiming new jobless benefits rose again last week. Under those circumstances, it's no wonder the White House is doing everything it can to make even the most dismal economic news seem like a silver lining on a very dark cloud.

That shred of news came yesterday in the form of the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO)
mid-year assessment of the budget and economic situation. In the report, the CBO lowered its projected 2011 economic growth rate from 3.1 percent in its January report to only 2.3 percent--well below the growth rate needed to reduce the unemployment rate.

The Parting Thought…

Stymied…Why is Congress so dysfunctional?

Few would argue that Congress has been dysfunctional for decades, through Republican and Democratic majorities, through Republican and Democratic Presidents, through divided control and one-party domination, through crises and calm, through good times and bad, through good leaders and bad. Both parties have proven dangerous to its citizens.
Its procedures and the collective behavior of its members do not produce anything close to what the public expects. Even on those rare occasions it does get something done, it is absolutely incompetent. A little dysfunction is one thing, but in perpetuity is another.

And now, with the country in recession and fighting two wars; when politicians continue to suffer puzzling lapses in ethics or wisdom…violating its Constitutional authority seems to be the rule for the past 30 or more years.

Congress has been corrupt for a long time. "Public policies for the benefit of the people" is no longer the purpose, nor even the goal, of Congress. The first purpose of Congress is to gain and retain the control of congressional power and to get themselves reelected.

It’s an endless game of partisanship over progress, greed over gumption in its endless self-serving pursuits.

Consider its inability to create a meaningful energy policy that would remove America from being held hostage to foreign oil producers while depleting our treasury.  Consider its anti-gun stance, essentially ignoring the Constitution; its inability to do anything meaningful about illegal immigration, its inability to create a fair tax system versus huge corporate welfare programs; its inability to remove the barriers and red tape which fuel our huge unemployment and so on.

Is Congress merely gutless and incompetent; are they bought and paid for by Corporate America or are they simply taking advantage of a gullible, dummied-down public…or a combination of all three?

I’ve felt a disturbance in the force…May it be with you!  The Poor Man…
